The Concept

A collaboration between leading architect Kengo Kuma, smartphone brand OPPO and Musicity, the international agency for music and architecture, Midori composed a multichannel installation for Kengo Kuma's Bamboo Ring, based on the theme of “creative connections” in the courtyard of the Cortile dei Bagni for Milan Design Week 2021. 

Through a supple yet rigid ring-like structure made of split bamboo laminated with carbon fiber sheets, the installation explores the harmonious relationship between humans and nature.

This installation uses innovative design and technology to fuse architecture and music to provide a sense of time and space as a user experience modeled after the "Bamboo Ring" presented at the 2019 London Design Festival.

Spatial Music and Technology

This multichannel composition consists of 24 channels, played through the Bamboo Ring that acts as a loudspeakers. 

Utilizing three different speakers embedded in the Bamboo Ring structure, Midori's composition explored the concept of sounds moving through the ring structure. 

The compositional structure is based on the four seasons - symbolic of nature's cycle and the ring.

Development and the Making

Culminating in a live performance at Milan Design Week 2021, the project developed from a series of collaborations working with architectural design and technology. 

For the exhibition and performance during the evening, lighting design was incorporated to illuminate the Bamboo Ring along with the music.
